After reading my post about the benefits of journaling you may be wondering ‘how do I get started?’. (If you haven’t read the post go read it now! If you have please proceed:))
Here is my short guide on how to start journaling. Trust me it’s easier than you could possibly imagine. Consistency is where the difficulty lies.
Identify the medium you want to use
You can journal digitally using a document on your computer or an app on your phone, or you can use a physical journal. If you are anything like me, you will quickly jump to the opportunity to buy a pretty notebook, but that isn’t your only option because you can sketch your thoughts anywhere; for example, on the back of a receipt or on any other bit of scrap paper.
Write
Make it your aim to write daily but if you fall short of this goal don’t beat yourself up. You may be wondering ‘what do I write?’ but I have a few prompts that will make journaling a breeze.
Prompts
- What am I most grateful for?
- What happened today?
- What truly makes me happy?
- What small changes can I make to my life to improve it?
- What are my goals?
- What is the most life-changing moment of my life?
- What is my most notable childhood memory?
But prompts don’t need to be serious. Here are some other things you can write about (but be sure to keep your journal safe):
- Write about that person who is giving you a hard time at work
- Write about that attractive man you saw in the supermarket
- Write about the fact that you hope that the person you despise steps on a Lego
- Write about something hilarious that happened 6 years ago that you can’t get out of your head
- Document your fantasies
- Write what makes you happy!
