“In order to bloom you must grow.” - Aly Aubry
Writing is hard. You can enjoy the process with every bit of your being; but, it will never not be work. Sometimes on a regular day it is hard enough to put pen to paper or finger to keyboard; and, when life throws you an unexpected curveball, writing becomes exponentially harder. Last week I was thrown a curveball, that threw me off completely. And although I am no expert at functioning in the midst of adversity; here is how I handled writing in the midst of my challenges:
Cut yourself some slack
It’s completely okay to slack off when you're facing a challenge. Don’t pressure yourself because that will only lead to burnout.
Take full advantage of the situation
Adversity usually comes with raw emotions, and it is the perfect time for you to pour them into your work. For example, if you are experiencing loss write about loss. The raw emotions that you are feeling will allow your work to have an even deeper connection with your readers. (Hence me capitalizing off my situation by making this blog post).
Use writing as a form of therapy
By journaling, writing poems, or even turning your experiences into a whole book you can experience the therapeutic effects of writing. By leaving it all on the paper you can feel much better afterwards. This also gives you something to look back on in the future. Remember not all writing needs to be shared, and sometimes you can do this solely for yourself.
